What is a wedding invitation insert card?

What is a wedding invitation insert? A wedding invitation suite usually includes more than just the invitation card and the envelope. There is most likely at least one insert card, sometimes a few! Today we’ll discuss what they are, which ones you may need, and then we’ll see some examples of different insert cards.

First of all, what is an insert card?

An invitation insert is a card used to share extra information with your wedding guests without crowding the main invitation with logistics. They can also be used to add extra sweet and special touches that are specific to you as a couple and your wedding day.

Are there requirements for which inserts I need?

Definitely not! I would say an RSVP card is really the only “required” card you should have but other than that, it all depends on the needs of your celebration and guests. You may not even need an envelope for your RSVP card if you have a QR code or a website where guests can RSVP.

Let’s go over the inserts in order of most common:

watercolor wedding invitation details card
  • Info/Details Card

This is an all-encompassing card that can include any of your details. You can have a wedding website link here where your guests can get more information, you can also list any pre- or post-wedding events, you can even include info about the reception if it’s in a different location.

If you have more than one of the things mentioned above, you should technically break them down into different cards:

  • Accommodations Card

Just as it says, this is where you can tell your guests about any accommodation info. Include things like the hotel block you’ve reserved, the different cabins around the venue they can rent, or the Airbnb’s around your home. This is especially helpful for destination weddings because we can include an overview of travel options, like the name of the nearest airport or contact info for any hotels where you've reserved a block of rooms. Tip: Don’t forget to include the reservation code if your hotel requires one!

  • Directions/Map Card

This may be my favorite card because it’s where we can create a beautiful watercolor map! We can also create a card with some gorgeous illustrations. We can paint icons of your venue as well as all of the locations where your guests may be going during the wedding weekend. If your venue is in or near your hometown, you can make this a map of your love story. Show guests where your first date was, or where your partner proposed to you, etc. This is one that isn’t necessarily necessary but a lot of couples include it for the sentimental factor!

  • Timeline Card

A timeline card is helpful if you have a lot going on during the wedding day or if you just want to clarify to guests what is going on. You can let your guests know the timing of when the ceremony starts, how long cocktail hour is, and the different events during the reception. We love including watercolor icons on this card!

  • Events Card

An events card is a card where you give your guests a schedule of the events happening that weekend or week. It is especially helpful if you are having a destination wedding or a lot of out-of-town guests. This is where I like to get creative and include little illustration of the different events. Having welcome drinks? Let’s paint a little champagne flute. Farewell brunch? Include a little plate with eggs! This card can be very fun!

  • Reception Card

If you’re having your reception in a different location than where your ceremony is, it should technically go on a separate card. You can list all the details here. I also love including a venue painting on this card.

  • Attire Card

This card is not as common because most of the time you can just include a small note about attire at the bottom of your invitation card. It can be useful for weddings with multiple events that have strict dress codes or if you just want to make sure your guests don’t have a panic attack about what to wear!

  • Registry Card

This card is also not commonly included because this is information you can include in your wedding website. Tip: NEVER ever include anything info about registry or gifts on your invitation card. That is considered a major faux pas.

Well, there you have it! I hope this was helpful in figuring out which insert cards you may need for your own wedding invitations.
